Maria Baghramian

Professor Maria Baghramian is ERA Chair and the Director of AUA Center for Ethics in Public Affairs. She is a Full professor of Philosophy at UCD School of Philosophy, Research Professor in the Department of Philosophy, University of Oslo. Her current areas of research include Epistemology (trust and expertise, relativism, pluralism, truth), Contemporary American Philosophy (Putnam, Davidson, and Rorty), and topics in the philosophy of science. She has published 14 authored and edited books and numerous articles and book chapters in these areas. She was also the editor of the International Journal of Philosophical Studies (2004-2014) and the co-editor of Contemporary Pragmatism (2016-2021).

Baghramian has held visiting posts at Harvard, MIT, Yerevan State University, Institut Jean Nicod, Paris, SCAS at University of Uppsala, and various universities in China. She was elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2010, to International Institute of Philosophy in 2021, and to Academia Europaea in 2022.

Her funded research projects include “When Experts Disagree” (WEXD), with the astrophysicist Luke Drury, Irish Research Council (2015-2018) and PERITIA – Policy, Expertise, and Trust in Action – a Horizon 2020 multi- disciplinary research project (2020-23). In the European arena, Baghramian been an active member of working groups on topics of truth, trust and science with the All European Academies (ALLEA) and its science and policy mechanism SAPEA, and the British Academy. Currently she is a Vice President of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. She was Highly Commended in the Irish Research Council 2022 Researcher of the Year Awards and was awarded a Fulbright Visiting Fellowship in 2014.
