Dr. Arshak Balayan is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the American University of Armenia (AUA). He earned his PhD in Philosophy from Yerevan State University (YSU) in 2009. Between 2011 and 2013, he was hosted by the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University as a visiting scholar, he served as the Magdalena Yesil Visiting Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. Before joining AUA in 2018, Dr. Balayan taught at Yerevan State University for nearly a decade. His academic interests span a broad range of philosophical disciplines, with primary focus on the intersections of philosophy of science, epistemology, moral philosophy, and political philosophy. His current research explores issues in social and political epistemology. He has authored numerous academic papers and translations in these fields. Dr. Balayan has made significant contributions to philosophical education and public discourse in Armenia. He is also the author of two widely used Armenian-language textbooks: Philosophy (Abridged Lectures) (2nd revised edition, 2016) and Moral Philosophy: Methods, Theories and Problems (YSU Press, 2023). In 2017, together with a group of colleagues, he co-founded the Yerevan Academy for Linguistics and Philosophy (YALP). From 2020 to 2023, Dr. Balayan participated in the EU-funded PERITIA Project led by Professor Maria Baghramian (University College Dublin), In addition to his philosophical research, Dr. Balayan is involved in various educational and social initiatives. He serves as Deputy Director of AUA Center for Ethics in Public Affairs (ETICA) and Co-Editor of ETICA: Yearbook of Ethics & Public Affairs alongside Professor Baghramian and remains committed to fostering a vibrant and globally connected philosophical community in Armenia.
